These Two Factors Are Making Hybrids Prime Targets For Catalytic Converter Theft
There has been a staggering increase in catalytic converter theft across the United States in recent years - especially among hybrid vehicles. Catalytic converters are present in all hybrid cars powered by gas and since hybrids frequently rely on battery power, the engines in hybrid vehicles operate at lower temperatures than those in traditional cars. Because of this, a greater amount of precious metals is necessary in their converters to effectively reduce emissions.
Couple this with the fact that hybrid vehicles have far less wear and corrosion in their catalytic converters, this makes them a far more profitable target than vehicles that are exclusively fueled by gas or diesel.
According to experts, a catalytic converter from a conventional vehicle can be worth from $25 to $300, whereas converters extracted from hybrid cars can command prices as high as $1,400 when sold.
In this recent report detailing which vehicles were most targeted for catalytic converter theft, both nationally and regionally in the US in 2022, hybrids saw a marked increase almost across the board.
Nationally, the Toyota Prius was the third most targeted vehicle - up 4 spots from it's 2021 rank. In the western states, it ranked number one for consecutive years. In the southwest, it ranked number 5 in 2022 while in the Midwest, the Prius went from 5th most targeted vehicle to 4th. The northeastern states saw a massive jump of 9 spots where the Prius was the 9th most targeted vehicle in 2022 - up from 18th in 2021.
